What the North Really Looks Like

It’s hard to believe how much is packed into the north of Montenegro. The landscape keeps changing, each part more surprising than the one before. If someone asked you in advance what it would look like, you probably wouldn’t guess it.

If you like nature, this is the kind of tour where you don’t need much explanation. It draws you in, keeps your attention, and at the same time somehow slows everything down.

By the end, you’ll see that it was worth it — and that awe and wonder probably describe the feeling best.

What Will You See?

The tour starts from Podgorica, leaving the flat area and gradually moving toward the north. As the road climbs, the landscape begins to change — first low hills, then higher mountains, then dense pine forests.

Before reaching Piva Lake, the surroundings are already varied, but the lake stands out with its unusual color. As you continue, you see it again from higher points, where it looks completely different from above.

From there, the road continues over Durmitor, climbing to around 2000 meters (6,560 feet). The terrain shifts again — forest, then more open plateau, then higher and more exposed mountain areas where the peaks dominate the view.

At the end, you arrive at Black Lake, surrounded by forest and the same mountains, but from a completely different perspective.

Depending on your preference, the tour can include a stop at the Tara River and the bridge at Đurđevića Tara, once the highest in Europe, as well as medieval tombstones and additional smaller lakes nearby.

On the way back, the return is done using a different, faster road.

Tour Highlights

Stops on the tour include:

• Piva Lake — known for its unusual, almost unreal water color
Drive over Durmitor — the most beautiful mountain in Montenegro with constant changes in landscape as you climb higher
• Black Lake —simply beautiful, surrounded by forest and high peaks (the walk to the lake takes about 15 minutes each way)

Optional:

• Đurđevića Tara Bridge — once the highest bridge in Europe, with a view over the Tara canyon that makes you stop for a moment (1 hour of additional driving, plus 15–30 minutes at the location)
• Alternative return route — avoiding the same road, passing through local villages with stops at Riblje and Devil’s Lake, and a visit to a medieval cemetery with stećci, adding around 45 minutes in total
• Lunch on Durmitor — in one of the local restaurants with traditional national dishes (1h)

The focus is on the drive through nature, with numerous scenic photo stops along the way (to enjoy the surroundings, take photos, or simply stretch your legs).
By the end of the day, you’re left with a simple realization — how small everything feels compared to the scale and power of nature.

Good to Know

What Makes This Tour Special?

The Drive Is the Experience

The point is not just getting somewhere, but everything that happens along the way. The process itself is what makes this tour, not just the destination.

Constant Change Without Repetition

From flat land to mountains, from forest to open space — it keeps shifting in a way that doesn’t feel predictable. Nothing looks the same for long, and that’s what keeps your attention.

Scale of Nature

At some point, it becomes clear how big and varied everything is. The mountains, the lakes, the distance between them — it gives a different sense of space and scale than you expect.

More Than One Highlight

Nothing really stands out as the one main highlight — because everything is. It’s not about one place, but about how each part adds up, making the whole experience what it is.
